Animux at Siggraph 2010
Published by Mark on Thursday, August 12th, 2010 in featuredFor the third year in a row the Animux team has had standing room only at their Birds of a Feather (BOF) in the Illustrious conference for computer graphics known as Siggraph.
At this year’s conference Mark and the rest of the crew revealed a couple of brand new goodies, such as Animux Enterprise (an RPM based release of Animux), and recovered some of the better known staples of the open source computer graphics world, like Blender, which just recently went beta on their 2.5 series. Some other programs that where demoed over the course of the conference were 2d tools like the Gimp, Inkscape, Kira, and a nifty little program called Alchemy.
Another tool that was introduced by the Animux team was ADAM. (Animux DIgital Asset Management). The purpose of this project is to create a tool that “will help animators manage assets and work flows that help in easy pipeline integration” (http://adam.animux.org/ – Main Page)
The program is expected to be released some time during the first quarter of next year.
Also shown where some short film projects created using only open source software. Some of those were: “Big Buck Bunny”, “Grey Justice: The Puncher of Men”, and “Prince Harming to Prince Charming”. (Kim Van Hoven, 2010)
Jason VanGumster from HandTurkey studios was also there to answer questions about running a fully functional studio utilizing open source technologies. As the director of “Grey Justice: Puncher of Men” & “Oversaturated” how spoe about how a bunch of animators from across the globe competed in the 48 Hour Film Festival where the completed a 5 minute animation short in 48 hours.
